The Importance of Beard Butter and Why You Need It

beard butter

Regardless of how well your beard grows, it’s liable to get dry, flaky, smelly, and rough. Great beards require care! We wash and take care of the hair on top of our heads, so what’s keeping us from investing in our beards as well?

We’re going to discuss beard butter in this article, giving you some insight into what it is and why you should consider adding it to your daily routine.

Hopefully, this article is the sign you need to start treating your beard how it deserves to be treated. Let’s get started:

What is Beard Butter?

First things first, what goes into a tub of beard butter?

The base of these kinds of butter is typically some kind of solid fat. In most cases, that’s some form of coconut oil, shea butter, or cocoa butter. These provide a good foundation for the rest of the ingredients to fit into.

Next, there’s a carrier oil. Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils so that they can be effectively transferred to the skin. Essential oils are often very concentrated, so much so that they have to be cut with something to be effective.

Further, essential oils and fragrances don’t always interact well with skin and hair on their own. So, a carrier like castor oil or argan oil is used to adjust the essential oils into a form that will allow them to interact well with your beard.

Next, the essential oils are added. These are primarily for scent unless there are some properties of the oil that you’re interested in using, so there are no rules on which essential oil is used.

Finally, beeswax or some other wax is used to create the correct texture.

What Does It Do?

There are a lot of grooming products out there that don’t seem to have a real purpose. You could go to the store, find a dozen high-priced organic grooming products, and never know whether or not they’re really working.

Beard butter is a little different. The thing is, your beard might have been untamed for so long that you’re not aware of how beneficial the effects will be. Let’s look at some of the benefits that you might not have known that you were looking for.

1. Moisturizes the Skin Beneath

Your beard might be snowing all over your clothes, household objects, work, and partner. Beard dandruff is very real, and it tends to start falling when our beards get a few inches long.

It’s tough to moisturize the skin beneath our beard because, well, there’s the hair covering it! That leads to a treacherous situation for the health of that skin. Beard butter works its way down and moisturizes the skin beneath our hair.

This cuts down on dandruff and keeps our faces healthy. Who knows, you might have to shave your beard for an event and find that the skin you haven’t seen for years is dry and unhealthy. Beard butter is a great way to avoid that scary situation.

2. Softens and Moisturizes Your Beard

Dry beards are rough on the skin, especially other people’s. It’s much more pleasant to have a beard that’s soft, conditioned, and isn’t itchy for you or the people who have to come in contact with it.

Beard butter can help to work its way into each strand of your beard and soften it just like a conditioner would on your hair. Plus, your beard will be coated with a light covering of the essential oils, waxes, and butter contained in the product.

3. Improves the Smell

Beards are liable to get pretty smelly over the course of a day or two. It happens secretly, but there’s sweat, food, and whatever else your body produces that get caught up in the hairs of your beard.

It’s like a really thick spider web that traps whatever enters, and whatever enters isn’t always the best for your smell. Beard butter just coats your hairs in a great-smelling oil that, at the very least, out shadows whatever smells are developing throughout the day.

Keep in mind that the way your beard smells isn’t something that you’re likely to notice. The changes happen slowly, and they’re happening immediately next to your nose so you’re desensitized to it in most cases. When someone comes in to give you a kiss or brushes by you, though, they’re sure to smell whatever is going on in there.

4. Improves Your Beard’s Appearance

Beard butter is great for forming and styling your beard. Naturally forming beards are wiry and can shoot out in all directions.

If that’s your thing, that’s your thing. That said, it’s generally good to groom your beard in a way that keeps it from darting every which way. Beard butter can help you keep things contained and stylish.

Plus, it’ll stay that way all day long.

5. Sense of Self

Finally, there’s the factor of your confidence. Taking care of yourself, even if it doesn’t change very much, boosts your confidence. That fact alone changes a lot.

Grooming and caring about the health of your body says a lot about you, and it makes you feel great. The simple fact that you’re taking time to groom your beard is a gesture to yourself that you’re important and you’re worth taking care of.

It might seem trivial, but those factors make a difference when we’re applying for jobs, going on dates, or trying to manage our relationships. Subtle things change when we start to change the way we see ourselves.

Those shifts are imperceptible to us on a conscious level. The same goes for shifts in other people. That said, our brains are working on a finer level than we’re aware of, and that minutia plays a huge role in the scheme of our lives.

So, take some time to groom that beard and see what happens.
